In 1988  was made ​​the first kidney transplant in the Department of Urology, Transplant and Robotic Surgery.

In parallel to the excellence of Kidney Transplantation , Urology growth increased from 1990 with a weekly calendar of 3 sessions operative surgical elective surgery over the activity of general urology .

Since 2000, the  Urology is one of the few centers to join the project transplantation of marginal kidneys , and kidney transplantation from a living donor .

Over the years, proportionally to the increase of the activity was an increased staffing plan .

In the early 2000 it was specified selectively ambulatory activity with the opening every day of the week of surgery of the various activities , oncology ( 2 days per week between first visits and check-ups ) , urodynamics , kidney transplant surgery , and stones , and an elective surgical operative session every day of the week , as well as diagnostic endoscopy 2 twice a week, and activities day Hospital / Surgery , in addition to ensuring the urgent Urological and Kidney transplantation activity .

The Urology dept  is currently performing all major surgeries “open ” , endoscopic surgery , and for some years have been introduced innovative methods such as brachytherapy and HIFU for the treatment of prostate cancer , laser treatment for ‘ prostatic hypertrophy, and especially from 2010 began the era of Robotic Surgery with the robot ” da Vinci ” applied to oncological diseases , but not only .From May 2012 is one of the few centers in Italy to carry out the removal of living donor kidney with the robot .

Currently the name of the Department of Urology is sc Urology and Kidney Transplantation Surgery and Robotics .

They regularly perform scientific work and publications in journals and conferences , Brotzu has for several years Centre for Clinical Trials of international multicenter clinical trials sponsored by large pharmaceutical companies , organizes and promotes conferences related to the activities of Kidney Transplantation and Surgery, Robotics, and meetings “Training” of its business excellence to external specialists.

The Department has at present 24 beds for inpatient , day hospital 4 beds , 3 operating theaters (one in the Xth plan for diagnostic endoscopy Urological open 2-3 times a week , and once a week for exams Urodynamics and every 3 weeks a month for the activity of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for calculi – ESWL) , 2 operating rooms to the fifth floor open on all working days including 1 for elective surgical activity and emergencies 24 / 24 hours Urological Withdrawal or organ / kidney transplantation and the other for Robotic Surgery with the presence of the Robot ” da Vinci “, which is also used by thoracic vascular surgery and emergency surgery in our hospital .

A surgical team of 2 doctors and 1 instrumentalist is always available 24/24 hours activities of the kidneys, which is performed regularly in all hospitals of Sardinia, and another team is available on public holidays and at night for the urological emergencies .

In 2011 in our clinics were visited approximately by 3850 patients.

In 2012 in our department 1135were hospitalized patients  and election emergencies .

In 2012 about 2295 surgeries were performed between election, emergencies , and diagnostic endoscopy in our 3 operating rooms.

From 2010 to date about 270 Robotics surgeries have been performed, exactly 210 Urological including 110 radical prostatectomies , 100 among cystectomy , nephrectomies , renal tumorectomies ” nephron sparing surgery ” , and pyeloplasty and with the opening of our Operating Room robotics department Vascular and Thoracic Surgery Emergency Surgery of our hospital also about 60 -Thoracic surgery Vascular and abdominal surgery.

In 2012 tre prestigious goal of 800 kidney transplants from living donors was achieved.

In 2012, 1135 patients including emergences were hospitalised.
